Every project is different

What is the

PROCESS

The process in bringing a character to life from the blank page can vary from project to project. Knowing what your goal ultimately is in achieving a final design is the first step.

Character Design Process

The Brief

Sketches help kick-off the process and start a conversation. Multiple ‘takes’ on a design offer a range of solutions and help set the overall style.

Designing an ‘Eyecon’

Let’s design a character with a classical “Iconic” appeal that is both classical an also feels modern. The character should be fun and playful, but have a somewhat edge, perhaps darker side that allows for occasional mischief and  chaotic adventure. This character could fit in a numerous media and be easily marketed as a brand.

  • Has an “Iconic” classic appeal
  • Mascot styling
  • Has a semi-darker edge
  • Could be animated or on a t-shirt
  • Let’s get a little weird!

Sketches

The Brief is the initial written ‘kernel’ of an idea that describes who or what the character is and what they represent.

Revisions

Revision passes are the iterative modifications used to begin defining what the final design will ultimately become.

Color Identity

Creating numerous possibilities for the final color palettes helps define the iconic qualities of the design and how it works within its environment.

The Final

Bringing the character to final helps to establish the final look target for production as well as providing a valuable asset for a project’s initial marketing requirements.

Turn-Arounds

Turns provide additional information for modelers, animators or just help to better understand how a character looks from various angles.

Facial Expressions

Facial Expressions sheets provide a deeper look into the personality and emotions of a character as well as how they look when expressing themselves.

Action Poses

Pose sheets offer a look into the personality and body language a character uses to move through their world.

Logo Design

A Logo helps to solidify and give a strong brand identity to a project or a character.
